"Permaculture is the conscious design and maintenance of agriculturally productive ecosystems which have the diversity, stability, and resilience of natural ecosystems. It is the harmonious integration of landscape and people providing their food, energy, shelter, and other material and non-material needs in a sustainable way." -Geoff Lawton
Many gardeners quickly overlook the design process and immediately start planting. The most efficient way to develop any landscape, edible or ornamental, is with a solid plan. A thoughtful design creates relationships between plants based on purpose, product, color, shape, texture, mood and companion planting. Without a well laid out design, a landscape plan can become too complex creating confusion and uneasiness. An ideal landscape ties together emotional, visual and tactile senses while using diversity and replicating natural ecosystems. Permaculture design is the process of creating a landscape that serves multiple purposes. These purposes can include water and energy conservation, organic matter and nutrient building, and the production of food.
Edible Landscape Design
Edible landscape design is a facet of Permaculture and can enhance ornamental spaces. Plants producing food can seamlessly flow in well thought out design and produce abundance for both humans and wild life. Native plants provide habitat for birds and insects and are resilient players in the landscape. Through the combined use of edible plants, native plants, and permaculture principles, a designed landscape can be harmonious in nature.
Why Permaculture?
Permaculture is an ethical framework that examines how the earth and human nature function, concluding with a design approach to allow humans to live in a system that supports the natural environment. We can develop human dwellings and landscapes that nurture the land, animals and humans in it. This creates an ecological system that is not competing with each component but instead is cooperating with one another. “In a sense, Permaculture is teaching us to mimic what nature already is; a fluid self-sustaining system of companionship and support.”
It’s a modern name for ancient old concepts. It’s connecting US to the land and the LAND to us.
Why Grow Organically?
Although the definition of organic growing may seem very broad, we like to look at it as a way of growing plants and food without using synthetic fertilizers and pesticides. Growing produce through natural methods has been around for as long as humans have existed.
The benefits of this method include:
- Making little or no impact on our soil, water, air, or the environment
- Conserving natural resources
- Reducing air, water and soil pollution
- Producing healthier plants that are better tasting
